The Torch is an eight-issue miniseries commissioned as a pseudo-sequel of sorts to Avengers/Invaders for Marvel Comics for its 70th anniversary. It is a thoughtful and intimate look at a classic Marvel character, the original World War II Torch. Writer Mike Carey fleshes his characters with definition and care, with detailed artwork by Patrick Berkenkotter. This first issue rated a surprising 8.3 from IGN.
The Soul of an Old Machine, part 1. The Torch is dead - buried with full military honors. But what does death mean for an artificial man? The Mad Thinker is obsessed with learning the secrets of Jim Hammond, AKA the Human Torch, but how far will he go? How does this all new limited series affect the Marvel heroes of today? And just what secrets from the Torch’s past will be revealed? The Mad Thinker is determined to find out, with the reluctant help of the Torch's best and oldest friend - Tom (Toro) Raymond. WRITER: Mike Carey, Alex Ross; PENCILS: Patrick Berkenkotter; COLORED BY: Impacto - Carlos Lopez; LETTERED BY: Todd Klein
